I have been hypo for the last 13 years....for the last 2 years I've been experiencing difficulties with my throat off & on....re: food sticking, difficulties clearing, tightness in throat & full feelings....I just recently had a ultrasound which came back showing an enlarged thyroid, no nodules & now I have to get a scan done. I am worried because I have to go off my medication for 3 weeks prior to getting this scan & am worried sick that I may crash. Has anybody here had this procedure done & can fill me in on what to expect? or thier own experiences...any help at all would be helpful !

Hi there Nature and welcome!! What you can do is get doc to Rx Cytomel (T3) just to keep you going while you are off your regular thyroxine replacement.
Then about 4 days prior to the RAIU, you stop taking it. And you must stop or else the RAIU will be skewed and you would not want that.
Are you on T4 only? Anyway, about 5 mcgs. of Cytomel per day should do you. Cytomel has a very short 1/2 life so it will exit your system quickly.
I am very glad your doc is doing RAIU because ultra-sound does have it's limitations.
Once again, welcome. Your post was way at the bottom and I am sorry I did not see it sooner.

Thank you for your response....I am just taking the drug eltroxin. Was taking synthroid for the first 5 years but that made me very funny. I thought I was doing well on eltroxin as far as having alot of symptoms of feeling hypo went - didn't know that these sensatations in my thoat could be possibly linked to thyroid...duh !! All these years, I've been thinking it was just a bit of stress & possibly acid reflux symptoms so I've been popping everything I could get my hands on for that...losec, renadine (sp), nexium, & finally zantac150 which has given me some relief from the fullness I feel in my throat. I do not have any visual swelling in my neck - & my doc has been checking my thyroid upon visits - it wasn't until I had a couple episodes of laying down & feeling like I was wasn't getting any air, that he sent me for an ultrsound - I live in a small town & have to fly to get this test done...3 hours flighttime....I'm really worried that being off my eltroxin will make me a nervous wreck for the flight & am trying hard not to think about it as it just gives me something to be distraught over - I will ask about cytomel - to see if he can prescribe this for me or not ! Thank you again.

Okay, as you know that is T4.
The thyroid (goiter) will take the path of least resistance so it is possible that it is growing inward enscapulating the vocal cords and eosophagus.
Oh, wow!! As if things are not bad enough!! Gosh, flying to the doctor.
There should be no reason why this doctor would not or could not compassionately Rx T3 only for you.
You are very welcome and do hang out with us when you can. We have a great group here. Holidays are very quiet; ordinarily it's a jumping place.

You are very welcome and I will be interested to see how your story unfolds. There is also a generic Cytomel.
Merry Christmas to you as well!
