Hi, my name is Susan and I just turned 25. I was born with a hypothyroid and was on medication throughout my whole childhood. i was actually always a skinny child but always had a belly, nevermind how skinny i was. when i was 12, my doctor decided to take me off medication and since that i have gained and lost weight so many times. Then i was diagnosed with Hashi's and my thyroid is almost completely destroyed. Since i dont have health insurance right now i went to a doctor and they claimed my thyroid levels were fine after having to have blood taken twice after they lost it and trying to reach them for a week and then the nurse kept saying something about good cholestorol levels until i reminded her that i had a thyroid test taken and she simply said oh your levels are fine just keep taking the 75micrograms. Since i am not bionic and have no thyroid left there is no way i have normal levels. Once i have health insurance i will go to a specialist.
Now to my real problem. I am 5'6" and i weigh 140 lbs. And my body is okay looking but my stomach makes me look 6 months pregnant. I cut refined sugar, i work out my abs, i do cardio and it just wont go away. Anyone else with that problem and hopefully found a solution?!

Welcome to the board. Your brain is trying to tell you something. You hit the nail on the head but not quite. Good for you on the sugar.

I believe you have insulin resistance. The sure sign of it is the Buddha Belly as I refer to it. I "had" the same problem. I was doing in excess of 100 sit-ups a day and a lot of other exercise too.

Then because of glucose tests persistently coming back high in the range but not over (pre-diabetic and diabetic) and doing some reading, decided I had IR.

Then I started taking a heaping tsp. of cinnamon powder in my breakfast yogurt every day. Walah!!! G O N E!! Gone!! No more Buddha belly. I also eschew all sugars, artificial sweetners as they affect the pancreas the same as sugar and all simple carbs. End of story.

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely try it. How long did it take you until you noticed the changes?

Maybe about 8 weeks. And I am a gym rat. I exercised throughout. Many years later, I still take the cinnamon and I still exercise and am much much more careful w/ my diet.

Maintaining; always maintaining. LOL!!

Aha; like minds!!! Good for you on the gym and lifestyle that goes with. So right you are. Exercising triggers the endorphins!! And you feel great!

Let me know how you do with the cinnamon. I think you have to take about a gram a day. We buy ours in bulk at Sam's Club so it does not really cost that much.

They do have capsules but they are expensive and I don't think they work as well.

I have pretty much settled on cinnamon in my yogurt every morning but it is good in apple sauce, in your coffee or Latte', oatmeal etc...............you just have experiment and find out what is best for you!

At first, you will void a lot. And I know you won't mind. Plus, this will let you know it "is" working. That tummy will come down!!

Glad to have you aboard!

Hugs,

I meant to ask; "Have you had a recent glucose test?" If not, I recommend it. You need to know where you stand w/this.

No i dont. i am calling my doctors office tomorrow and asking for a copy of my results. Are the glucose tests the one you can purchase at the drug store because if i will just take one then. I will let you know the results and maybe you can tell me what they mean.
I am putting the cinnamon in my yogurt. tastes awesome! first i put it in cottage cheese but i dont really like cottage cheese anyways. yogurt works fine for me

Oh man, I was exactly the same as a kid. Even when I was little I was bone thin, hardly ate, but I had the big stomach. I remember being self conscious of it even when I was five. I've always had symptoms of intermittent hypothyroidism.

I got tested for insulin resistance a few years back and came back normal range (fasting insulin was a little lower than I would have liked) for everything. I periodically check my glucose at home (fasting and not), all with flying colours. However, I do think I've always had massive adrenal issues since birth.

What makes things worse is my body type, which is that of someone who has Marfan syndrome. I mention this because some people think it's normal, since they're so used to it, but get frustrated when they only put weight on over their stomach (and occasionally butt and thighs).

So, a couple of things to consider there. If you were born with hypothyroidism, you might do well to check into adrenal problems and Cushing's syndrome. Some 'sub-acute' forms of Cushing's present with just a couple annoying symptoms, rather than all the devastating ones.

Let us know what you find out, if you can. :D

OMG this all makes sense now.
I have a Buddha belly...rock hard. When I eat it gets even tighter and pushes out even more. I literally feel 9 months preggers. I look like I could deliver twins at any minute. I hate it so much, it makes me feel terrible.
The Dr. told me that I was pre-diabetic. I guarantee it now that I am Insulin resistant.....BUT WHAT does that mean? How do you treat it?

I do know that I have 3 cystic nodules on my thyroid and my TPO is 1,000. I am not on ANY medication for my thyroid as of yet. I do take high blood pressure medicine. Dr. did a cushings test on me am waiting to see what that says. I even hate to eat because I know my belly will be so out there. That's where I carry my weight always have, and this certainly doesn't make life any easier.

Anyone does my logic seem sound?

Hi, yes..................the Buddha Belly Club!!! I combat mine with being very careful about food choices and portions. Then I also take a heaping tablespoon of cinnamon in my yogurt every morning. I walk and exercise a lot.

Nothing,no exercise including 100's of sit ups never solved this problem until I realized what it was. INSULIN RESISTANCE!!

If your glucose lab results always come in high in the range, chances are strong that you have IR.
