So i'm 17 with Hashimoto's disease or hypothyroidism and recently i've been hearing a lot about HCG and how that can reset your metabolism, and that that might be a good way to go, but considering my age i am not so sure about this, and if it will be damaging to my health but i'm really fed up with not knowing what is the best thing to do for this disease :( i've been to a lot of doctors that have pushed me to my stress limit when it comes to not giving me the right answers because of their own concerns with money. It's been constant back and forth tugging at the medication as far as working and not working goes. It's been a real struggle. Please any help at all. If anyone knows about thyroid surgery replacements or any sort of old thing. I'm currently on Armour because synthroid didn't work for me after a while. HELP!!

Well, my goodness!! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/LuLu1471/welcome.gif
Tell me please: How much Armour are you on daily and how are you feeling now? How long have you been on Armour?
Do you have copies of your last labs for thyroid that you can share w/us? We would like results and the ranges. We must have the ranges as different labs use different ranges.
Are you male or female? What happened at age 12 to prompt a diagnosis of Hashimoto's?
What are your current symptoms? I am assuming you would not be here if you felt perfectly fine?

Please don't use HCG without a doctor's supervision.

Well I'm currently taking 60 mg of armour. i've been on it for about 3-4 months. Its been helping much more than the synthroid i was previously taking and i never plan on going back to that. I do not have a current lab result :( sorry. My symptoms are, occassional excessive sleeping (3-4 extra hours during that day not including the 8 hours i'll sleep at night). weight gain when the meds fluctuate. Constant coldness (ex: if it's 74 it feels like its 70), mood swings, lack of appetite and excessive appetite (it swings). i'm female. At 12 we thought i had mono because i was sleeping so much, but we went to the doctor after we got fed up with trying to keep me from sleeping all day because i had been sleeping for 8 extra hours a day until dinner. i'd wake up for dinner and then go right back to sleep and sleep the whole night. we went the the doctor and he told me i was the youngest he'd ever seen with this disease and that my thyroid levels were at 0 and i needed to hurry and revive it. My throid was dead. I had a goiter almost golf ball sized, and had an extra 30 pounds on.

I am thinking that you may be undermedicated. That is why recent labs would be good if you can get some and post the results and ranges here.
TSH, FREE T4 and FREE T3. The Frees are very important because this is the unbound hormone available for cellular uptake. And the Free T3 "is" your active hormone.
On Armour, we expect to see the Free T4 on the low side for that reason (as stated above about the FT3 because you are taking T3 in the Armour) BUT...................the Free T3 should be @ about 75% of the range provided by your lab. Different labs use different ranges and that is why when you post your lab results, we need the ranges.
In reality, you should be getting labs every 8 weeks so your Armour can be titrated to your needs by about 1/4 to 1/2 grain each time. This continues until you feel terrific (euthyroid.)
This will explain the difference between the T4, T3 and FT4, FT3.

Is your goiter gone?

yes, it's gone now. but i've been hearing a lot about the HCG diet helping thyroid production. i'm not sure how but there have been a lot of great reviews about it. i'm just scared it will mess up something in my body because i am so young and my metabolism is still setting itself.

Listen to your own "red flags!" There are horrible side-effects to using HCG and some of them can be permanently damaging. It could ruin your chances of having healthy children of your own some day as it messes with the sperm/ova of both males and females.
If you wish to lose weight, perhaps we can help?
Plus, we do have to see if you are on the proper amount of Armour. You cannot lose weight if you are not euthyroid. If you are undermedicated, you are not euthyrod.
We need labs and ranges.............when you can.

Good; no rush but when you can. Ideally, you should be getting labs every 8 weeks and the doctor should be raising (or lowering) your dose as needed. As you already know, I think you are undermedicated for a 17 year old young man.
I am on 3 1/2 grains of Armour and I am 68. LOL!! Anyway, I am very very physically active. Not your ordinary 68 year old here!!
Your doctor is not being responsible with your care because if 60 mg. is not enough, it has you in a bad place. The only good place is where you feel great and are able to lose weight w/o any diet aids and maintain your weight thereafter.
