Hi all. Just looking for some advice and/or reassurance I guess... My husband has been diagnosed via nuclear scan with a "hot" nodule. He has been referred to a thyroid surgeon whom he sees in about 2 weeks. I had the feeling of a sense of urgency from the GP as he said that the nodule was large and very active (he neglected to say how big and we didn't think to ask..). He also asked whether my husband thought it had grown within the past week. He explained that we needed to treat it fairly quickly as it could continue to grow and become more difficult to remove. I am trying to get a sense of how quickly we should be moving on this and is another 2 weeks to see a specialist too long? Should I be more insistent with getting an earlier appointment? How much time do we have? Should I be asking the GP for any sort of medication to treat his symptoms in the mean time (hyperthyroidism). His whole neck is swollen to the point where his chin is disappearing and the large lump at the base is visible. He also seems to be getting pimple/boil like growths on the outside of his neck. Not sure if these are related. If anyone has any experience with the hot nodule and any advice that could ease or even confirm my anxiety it would be so much appreciated.
Hope to hear from someone!
Thanks,
Amanda

Hi, Amanda and welcome to the Board. Oh, wow!!! While hot nodules are not usually cancerous, this one sure sounds suspicious. I do happen to agree with your GP and you know, you could always try to get hubby on a cancellation list w/ the surgeon so that perhaps he can get in sooner? You would be surprised; you may luck out on that.

Do you think your husband is in danger from the hyperthyroidism? Why has he not been treated sooner? Only reason I wonder is I am trying to weigh info in the balance here and come up with some sensible comments and suggestion.

Here is some info from Thyca........
http://www.thyca.org/nodules.htm

This is also informative...........

So, you see..........the jury is sort of out and I say, "Don't take a chance"; do what the doctors advise your husband to do.

We are here for you!
