Hi:

I have had a large thyroid for at least 12 years. I've been told that my thyroid tests are normal but over the past 6 years I have been having various aliments, from sore muscles, dizziness, tiredness and sleepiness--sometimes inability to sleep at night but always tired. Over the past year, towards the end of my IUD expiration I have had unusual menstrual cycles. Sometimes I get two a month or it can last as long as 20 day and as little as 12. Over the past week I find that I am vomiting often for no apparent reason. I usually happens in the morning (it's not morning sickness). I feel especially sensitive to light, so bad it makes me want to stay inside during the day. I get migraines, my joints feel especially brittle, I feel like I have carpal tunnel, plantar facitiis in the arch of my feet (and now I feel it on top of my foot, as if I walked on my foot wrong) and if that is not enough I also feel like I forget long-term memory things and my intelligence has been compensated.

In June I was encouraged by a friend to have my thyroid looked at more closely, which lead me to get an ultrasound. It was there that they found an enlarged nodule. The biopsy showed that I have abnormal cells, which could be cancerous. I had a second biopsy that showed the same results. I was told that I won't know until I get surgery to have the right side of my removed.

My question is if my lab results (including T3 and T4) are normal why am I having so many problems?

Hello all!
It just occured to me that my doc put me on 25 mcg Synthroid per day due to my TSH count of 4.83 and high antibody counts which show Hashimotos. The doc has not checked my T3 or T4 counts. Is this something that I should push for? I am thinking about going to a specialist anyway but I'm a little concerned that the T3 and T4 were never tested.
Opinions?
Thanks!

I was wondering if it is common to have issues where certain foods you eat seem to get stuck in your throat? I just finished eating a soft taco and it seems like some is stuck and the same thing happened last night. I am hypo w/enlarged thyroid and (2) nodulars apprx. 1.5 cm (awaiting biopsy date of 9/20). I really appreciate everyone sharing info and suggestions here. This site has been a God Send to me to be able to read and know I am not alone anymore! Hugs and well wishes to all!

Day 2 Synthroid: Heart Racing?

Hello-
I'm on Day 2 since starting 25mcg of Synthroid and I'm experiencing some mild heart racing. Is this a sign that I'm taking too much or could it be that I'm still "settling into the medication" and it might go away?

My doc prescribed Synthroid because I have a long laundry list of hypo-like symptoms, yet all of my thyroid test results are "normal". My TSH is also only 1.9 (other lab results reported in an earlier thread). I also have a very strong family history of Hypothryoidism and Hashi's.

I'm thinking about calling my doctor because my heart feels like it is racing. It's not horrible, but it makes me feel uncomfortable (like I've had a couple cups of coffee). I'm just wondering if this feeling is common within the first few days of taking the medication and wondering if anyone noticed this going away after settling into the medication?

Thank you for your help.

I already posted how crappy I feel & I have thyroid issues: had 1/2 removed due to nodules, other 1/2 nodules now growing, levels are within range - but have constant headaches & migraines, ALWAYS tired, very exhausted, hands & feel always cold, get sick in the heat easily, menstral cycles very heavy & irregular & the list goes on!

I do not excercize due to the way I feel. I try to hike with the family, but can't keep up - when the blood starts to flow, my headaches just get worse.
My regular MD simply says I have to work through it - there is nothing he can do to help. I am always exhausted, so I don't go out walking or anything. I work 40 hours a week, coach softball & cheerleading (and participate), I do some yard work & housework - so I am not a complete couch potato.

I am 5ft 2in & weight 150lbs. (37 year old female). So, I am not "obese or over weight" - just out of shape. Yes I could be smaller, I know that.

My question is: will excercising (forcing myself no matter what) help? or does this truely sound like something going on with my thyroid?
Be honest - don't worry about hurting my feelings - I just want to feel better & will do whatever it takes at this point.... please:)

So, since I have been feeling yucky (about 2 years now) I feel that I have maintained a normal healthy weight of 112 lb and I'm 5'2.5''. In the last month and a half though, I have jumped up 5 lb and I am continuing to slowly rise. I was diagnosed with Hashi's a week ago and have been on Synthroid. I kid you not I have felt much more bloated and "fat" since starting the meds. I have worked out daily and ate a healthy balanced diet. I am gaining weight, close aren't fitting, hot flashes, other times very cold and chilled, dizziness, lethargy, extreme exhaustion, headaches, upset stomach, jitteriness, the works. Should I link these symptoms to synthroid? Or would you say these are Hashi's symptoms and I'm just not getting enough medication or it's just too soon for the meds to be working? Help! I feel as though Synthroud is making this so much worse. I am sooo upset right now. Thanks for listening...

My name is Chris and I was diagnosed with Hashi's 17 years ago. Routine blood work showed TSH of 7. I was totally free from any symptoms at the time. Doc said I had to start thyroid meds, so put me on synthroid and sent me on my way. I felt awful after taking it!!! ...so, I took myself off the meds and lived doctor and replacement free for 15 years! During that time, I was happy, energetic, multitasking, full of life. Never suffered any symptoms. At yearly check ups, TSH was always very high (between 19 and 25). Doc argued that I needed to be on Meds and I told him I felt great with out them and was not going to take them. I exercised, ate right and was at a healthy weight. Fast forward to January 28th, 2008 (it's funny how you never forget the moment your life changes!)...in a matter of about 3 seconds, my life changed so drastically, I don't know if I will ever be the same!! Out of nowhere, my heart started racing, flushing, dizzy, vomiting, whole body was shaking, mind racing, heet rushes, palpitations, I thought I was having a heart attack or dying. This was at 10:30 at night. I spent that night curled in a ball on the bathroom floor. Could not move, drink, sleep, just layed there and shook, my mouth was so dry i could not swallow, my heart raced so fast I thought it would jump out of my chest. I was in the emergency room twice in the next three days. First dx was food poisoning, 2nd dx was anxiety....but I know this wasn't right. Went to see my Doc who insisted I was experiencing thyroid storm because I refused to take the meds I should have been taking for the past 15 years. he put me on levothyroxin, beta blockers, xanax and drew blood. he called and got results from blood I had drawn at my emergency room visits. Emergency room reported TSH of 25. This had never been a problem for me in the past. When my Doc drew it, it was at 12. This was in a matter of 5 days. Needless to say, I was not geting better and lived with these constant symptoms all day every day. It was like a panic attack that never goes away. It felt as though someone had opened my head and was dumping adreniline into me. Doc finally did a 24 hour urine for chatacholamines about 3 months later. Results all came back double and triple the high levels. Was biochemically diagnosed with Pheochromocytoma but no scan has been able to find a tumor as of yet. My symptoms persisted for about 6 months. It was totally dibilitating and I spent most of the time in bed, so hyper I could not move, yet so drained and totally exhausted at the same time. Had a brain scan to see if there was a pituitary problem, nothing found. Thyroid scan found small nodule on right lobe and texture indicative of thyroiditis and Graves. Doc did not feel an FNA was needed. Had a PET scan, nothing found but an ovarian cyst and small nodules on left adrenal gland. Have had metabolism panels run, all look good. Hormone panels all look good. My ACTH was low and serum cortisol high, but after having the cortisol supression test done, it came out normal. Took the 24 hour saliva test for adrenals, results showed high cortisol in the morning and late at night and low cortisol in the afternoon and early evening. Doc put me on adrenal supplements. I am at a loss at this point as to where to turn next. I have been to so many specialist. Wore a 30 day heart monitor, dxs with Tachicardia, still on beta blockers for that. Even though it is not as bad now as it was for those first 6 months, I still have a hard time EVERYDAY! I wake up to a heart beat of around 115-140 everymorning! I have dizzy spells where I almost pass out while standing up, I have lost so much weight, always have a feeling of "fullness". I recently experienced my first bout with horrible hives, lasted about a month. Somedays my eyelids are so swollen, I can hardly open my eyes. My most recent thyroid lab results are as follows:

12-9-2009
TSH 3.25 (.45-4.5)
FT4 1.46 (.82-1.77)
FT3 2.2 (2.0-4.4)
RT3 497 (90-350)

5-13-2010 (SAME REFERENCE RANGES AS ABOVE)
TSH .87
FT4 .73
FT3 2.9
RT3 184

7-23-2010 (SAME REFERNCE RANGES AS ABOVE)
TSH .25
FT4 .84
FT3 3.7
RT3 319

Thyroid antibodies were at 1000. Never been tested for TSI. Since all of this started while I was on no meds at all, can any of you suggest where I go next? None of the meds seem to take care of symptoms. Doc wants to start an SSRI to keep the heart rate down and try to relieve anxiety, but I am hesitant to do that. I do not want to live with the side effects. Any suggestions, information or knowledge would be so greatly apreciated. I pray for all who experience this hardship and wish us all good health and happiness. Thank you so much for listening. God Bless...Chris :0)

My Endo said she wanted to take some more blood tests and I am scheduled to take an Thyroid Uptake and Scan tomorrow because a few of my nodules are on the larger size between 2.5-3cmThe only thing I know from my blood test is that she said my TSH was 1.0, I really did not know what questions to ask so I dont have any more information from my visit:sad0049: I wanted to know what should I expect during this exam and what are the next steps?

The overwhelming majority of Hurthle cell carcinoma is not iodine avid, so I-131 is ineffective in treating or diagnosing metastatic disease. Prognosis depends mainly on extent of disease ..................................
Read the whole abstract; this is important stuff here.........
This is shocking that RAIU is of no value diagnosing this. Lord have mercy!~
I have appointments scheduled with two new endos, and I'll decide who to hire after seeing both of them. But what do I ask?

One thing I want to know is what can be done to determine if any cancer is in my remaining right lobe. (They found after three benign FNA's and after surgery that I had a papillary microcarcinoma which, while it was encapsulated, had capsular invasion).

I also want to discuss my Synthroid dose. I"m on 100mcg but I suspect it's too strong. I've been having heart palpitations daily and the anxiety is getting worse. I thought the anxiety was a 'normal' reaction to all I've gone through this summer, but I'm starting to think it's beyond that.

I also will insist on having the Free T3 tested, which my previous endo refused to do.

But how do I know if she's a 'good' endo? What would you/do you ask when you change doctors?
